Today, my day started out a little weird! I was eating breakfast and the news was on
the TV in the background. All of a
sudden I heard, “blah blah *Dutch I don’t understand* blah blah TUCSON blah
ARIZONA *more Dutch.” It turns out that
the dust storm that caused that horrible crash near Casa Grande made international
news. WOW!
Today, we braved the cold and headed out to Zwolle to do
some last minute Christmas shopping for some of the children. We went to Shirley’s house to meet up with
her and her husband, Rudi and then we formed a caravan into a local shopping
area. It was pretty cool because the buildings
are so old and it’s not your typical shopping mall. We had been there before, but it was so hot
the last time we were there; we would stop at each place that had cold
drinks. We seem to bring extreme weather
with us each time we come here!
We ate lunch at the same café we went to last time we
were here, found the gifts for the kids we had left to buy for, and then headed
to another town to visit another family member.
We made our way back to pick up Tante (aunt) Ollie and
head to Hardewijk where we met up with Donna
and her family at their home. They live
in a little city that has everything they need at their fingertips! Their house is right across from a bakery! The house blends in with the shops around
them so much that people accidentally walk in if their door is open thinking
that it is another shop! Their house is
over 300 years old and they keep the old look and feel to their place. In the middle of the development, there is an
ice skating rink for the winter. There
were many people out skating, which is something we obviously don’t see at all
at home. The streets were decorated with
lights and Christmas decorations. It was
fun to walk around and see everyone out, even though we were freezing!
Once we were
done here, we headed to dinner. All of
us were meeting at a Pannenkoeken Huis (Pancake House) for dinner. I believe there were close to or just over 30
people there. We had a buffet of
pannenkoeken, which resembled crepes and had different things to put on
them. Some of them had kaas (cheese) or
some had ham. Others were plain and you
added either chicken or fruit and chocolate sprinkles. They were so good! We visited and ate and then headed home.
Each night, we would wind down with some kind of alcohol and more visiting. I actually drank a whole beer…..Heineken (for my peeps who told me to have one for you. You should feel special knowing that I don’t drink beer.

We finally went
to bed so that we could get up and get our stuff ready to head to the house we
all rented for 3 days over Christmas. It
should be a great weekend!
